Mount Bromo is famous for its sunrise, volcanic landscape, Sea of Sand, and crater view. However, if you still have more time in East Java, adding a waterfall to your itinerary can make your trip more complete.

There are many waterfalls in East Java, but two of the most recommended waterfalls to combine with Mount Bromo are Madakaripura Waterfall and Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. Both offer a different experience, different route, and different level of adventure.

Top Two Waterfalls to Visit After Mount Bromo

1. Madakaripura Waterfall

Madakaripura Waterfall in Indonesia

Madakaripura Waterfall is the best waterfall to visit after Mount Bromo. It is located in Probolinggo Regency, on the common route between Surabaya and Bromo via Probolinggo. Because of its location, many travelers visit Madakaripura after finishing the Mount Bromo sunrise tour.

This waterfall is famous for its tall cliffs, green canyon, and dramatic water streams falling from different sides of the rock wall. The atmosphere feels fresh, quiet, and very different from the dry volcanic landscape of Mount Bromo.

Madakaripura is a good choice if you want a same-day add-on after Bromo. After watching the sunrise, visiting the crater, and returning from the jeep area, you can continue to Madakaripura before going back to Surabaya, Malang, or Probolinggo.

However, travelers should prepare to get wet. The walking path can be slippery, and you may need to pass through wet areas before reaching the main waterfall. It is better to bring sandals, a raincoat, waterproof bag, and extra clothes.

2. Tumpak Sewu Waterfall

A Traveler in Tumpak Sewu Waterfall

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is not as close to Mount Bromo as Madakaripura, but it is one of the best waterfalls to include in an East Java itinerary. It is located around the border area of Lumajang and Malang Regency, in the Pronojiwo area.

Tumpak Sewu is famous for its wide curtain-like waterfall view. From the panorama viewpoint, travelers can see many water streams falling from a high cliff, creating one of the most beautiful waterfall views in Indonesia.

This waterfall is better for travelers who have at least 2 or 3 days in East Java. A common route is Surabaya or Malang - Tumpak Sewu - Mount Bromo, or Mount Bromo - Tumpak Sewu - Malang. It is not ideal as a short add-on after Bromo if you only have one day.

The trekking at Tumpak Sewu is more adventurous than Madakaripura. The route to the bottom area can be steep, wet, and slippery. For this reason, it is highly recommended to visit with a local guide, especially if you want to go down to the waterfall base.

Which Waterfall Is Better to Visit After Mount Bromo?

If you want the easiest waterfall to combine with Mount Bromo, choose Madakaripura Waterfall. It is closer, more practical, and suitable as an add-on after the Bromo sunrise tour.

If you want a more dramatic waterfall experience and have more travel time, choose Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. It requires a longer route, but the view is more impressive and suitable for travelers who love nature, photography, and adventure.

In short, Madakaripura is better for a simple Bromo add-on, while Tumpak Sewu is better for a longer East Java adventure.
